Ampelos Winery and Vineyards is in the heart of Santa Rita Hills. It is in the area between San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. The proprietors, Peter, and Rebecca Works, are both the grape growers and winemakers. This boutique winery only produces approximately 5000 cases a year. Well known for the high quality of land suitable to produce excellent Pinot Noirs, in 1999, Rebecca and Peter purchased 82 acres in Santa Rita Hills. The Name “Ampelos” comes from the Greek word meaning vine. Their philosophy is focused on sustainability by practicing Organic and Biodynamic agriculture. The Works pay close attention to the vineyards because they believe in the theory that the farmer needs to know his fruit. Their focus is to produce hands-on, minimally invasive, wines that reflect the terrain from which they are grown.
13 Prime Steak offers Ampelos Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills 2018. This wine is a perfect expression of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. It is 100% Pinot Noir and is unfined and unfiltered, which makes it very complex and flavorful at the same time. In the nose, this wine presents aromatic fragrances of rose petals and lavender. In the palate you taste fresh squeezed strawberries, cherries and subtle earthy notes of mushroom and nutmeg.
When I think about food pairing ideas to have this wine accompany, I would suggest our Sauteed Mushrooms, the 13 Prime Grilled Bacon, or The Filet Diane. This wine also pair beautifully with the Pan Roasted Chicken Breast. Salud!
